LAST TRIBE (2002) (English)

Magnus Karlsson was born in south of Sweden in 1973. He began playing guitar at age 10, and almost immediately started his first band. He studied classical guitar in school, but his band was into “The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal” and he listened to bands such as IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, DIO and BLACK SABBATH.

In 1989 Magnus decided to devote the most of his time to become a better guitar player and songwriter. His main influences were Steve Morse, Steve Vai and Allan Holdsworth. He played in different metal and fusion bands and developed a style that mixed metal with folk music. He joined a Celtic folk group in 1991 called HOT PEBBLE and toured in Scandinavia for two years as a guitarist and a banjo player.

In 1996 he started an education at MALMOE COLLEGE OF MUSIC and was awarded a master degree in “music education” 2000. During the time in college Magnus started to write songs in the metal tradition again and started LAST TRIBE. He also joined MIDNIGHT SUN on the “NEMESIS” album released in Europe in late 2000 by POINT MUSIC. Magnus got a lot of attention in the media due to his incredible skills and tasteful approach, including　important magazines like YOUNG GUITAR, BURRN! etc.

LAST TRIBE was put “on hold” for a while, but Magnus kept on riting his own songs after the recordings and promotion of MIDNIGHT SUN. The final result is “THE RITUAL”, the band’s debut album which can be described as melodic metal with a touch of progressive elements and very strong vocals. The debut album that where released on FRONTIERS/NOW & THEN on June 25th is called “THE RITUAL” and was produced by Anders “Theo” Theander (PAIN OF SALVATION, MIDNIGHT SUN, SANDBERG etc.).

After a critically successful debut album “THE RITUAL” (87/100 BURRN! – 5/6 ROCK IT – 8/10 ROCK HARD – 6/7 METAL HAMMER – 10/12 HEAVY ODER WAS etc), the band faced the fact of topping such an album and Magnus started to write new songs for the follow up during the summer of 2001. Magnus has his own small
home studio that made it convenient for co-producer Anders “Theo” Theander to get into the new material. It was easy to realize that the new album had some really killer songs to work on. As the debut album got raving reviews from most of the important magazines in both Europe and Asia, this was a really important album.

In the meanwhile key members Magnus and Rickard decided to part ways with Kristoffer and Paeron this new album. They are all still good friends but the way the new album progressed, Magnus decided that this was for the best. The progressive elements are highly advanced and needed experienced musicians as Dick and Jaime.
Jaime needs no further introduction, as he is one of Sweden’s top drummers and also a co-member with Magnus in MIDNIGHT SUN, therefore this choice seemed to be an obvious one. Since Jaime is no longer a member of THE FLOWER KINGS, he decided to join Magnus and Richard in the band. Dick Loevgren is a high profile bass
player and has been a good friend of Rickard for many years. Dick and Rickard have been working together in the ARMAGEDDON-project with Chris Amott, Daniel Erlandsson on the “EMBRACE THE MYSTERY” (TOYS FACTORY) album, who toured in Japan about a year ago. Dick has also toured with bands such as ARCH ENEMY and IN FLAMES. The lead singer of A.C.T, Herman Saming, is also singing back-up vocals on 2 songs.

Sometimes there are big rumors in the music biz around a band that is not heard from many. Sometimes they make success , but when it is time for a 2nd album nobody cares – It was just another hype.

LAMBRETTA is totally opposite. When the englishmen have to read about a new BEATLES everytime they open NME, LAMBRETTA have spend time preparing. Instead of hanging out in the right places, get to know the right people and hang on to the new trends they have focused on their music. The debut album did not really make it to the charts – but the interest for their follow up has nevertheless been quite big.

Things has happened fast. In early September not many knew that the album was due to release.

“When a list in over the autumn releases was published in one major newspaper our album was not mentioned”, says the guitar player AndersEliasson and looks satisfied. “But now the word is out !”

LAMBRETTA had been a band for quite a while when their debut single “Blow My Fuses” was released. That song was a big radio hit and topped the Swedish “Top of Summer”almost the whole summer of ’99. The video also won the cathegory “Best Video of the Year”. Therefor LAMBRETTAhas been considered “a one hit wonder” by some. The one’s that took their time listening to their album would notice it was quite a nice piece of work.

It is still great , but nothing compared to what’s about to come now!

Even the one’s warned was blown away by their 1st single “Bimbo”. A straight in the face kind of song with a groovy heavy metal riff , massive melodies and an attitude , but still down to earth. That song together with a couple more on the album was written by the musical “dream team” Per Aldeheim, Alexander Kronlund and Max Martin.

So, LAMBRETTA is just another band waiting to be given “the magic touch”? “We really had no intention asking them for material” the band says. The fact is that they had written a song aimed for LAMBRETTA and asked the company if they thought that we would be offended by their offer. “They knew we did write all of our material ourselves”.

LAMBRETTA listened and loved the song and agreed that the song quality was a lot more important than the members’ egoes.

“I wrote 80% of the 1st albums songs and now it’s like 3 songs” says Anders, but has no problems with that as it is for the bands best. And LAMBRETTA is really a band. They who have seen them live can assure you they are real energizers on stage. They do not like other Swedish apologize for their presence and have a “butter-cool” attitude – They deliver.

Few have discussed LAMBRETTA without mentioning the difference of age in the group.

When Linda Sundblad joined up she was just 15 years old – just half the age of some of the members. Everyone thought she did ot just fit in, but also gave a vitamin injection to the group and to the whole Swedish music scene; young, smart and talented she became the rock version of Robyn. Many thought she should not stay long in the band, and there was a lot of efforts for making her going solo. But Linda refused.

“The more they tried to convince me to do my own thing and leave the band, the more sure I got to stay and show them that they were wrong” she says. “Because I know how strong we are together – how important everyone in the band are. Playing a lot of gigs without having an album to promote has proved it. We rock and enjoy the stage – and people notice it”.

Linda is 20 now and has been really growing in the roll of “Female Swedish rock star supreme”. Just check out the “Bimbo” video or the way LAMBRETTA opened the Grammy awards a year ago – they really kicked the Swedish music biz’s ass.

If LAMBRETTA earlier stood for pop with heavy guitars , they are today more of a classical rock band with extra big hooks. Nevertheless the real sensitive songs are there, too. They still takes the best out of 4 decades of rock music into the new millenium. At some time the word “arena rock” got a bad rumor. Like if it was a genre of its own . The truth is that arenas are really a nightmare for acts not fitting in there , but can be really tempting and create a nice atmosphere – if it´s the right band onstage.

When you listen to LAMBRETTA’s 2nd album it is easy to imagine hand in the air, lots of lighters and a crowd jumping as one man. All this to a tight and accurate band that knows their material is really strong. The stripes of LAMBRETTA is completed with extremely good road behaviours.

時に、多くの人々に聴かれてもいないバンドの大きな噂が音楽業界で流れる事がある。時に彼等は成功するが、2ndアルバムが出る頃には誰も気に留めていない－それはよくある誇大宣伝という奴だ。

LAMBRETTAは全く逆のバンドだ。イギリス人がNMEを開く度に次のTHE BEATLESの話を読まなくてはならない時、LAMBRETTAは準備に余念がなかった。然るべき場所に出入りする代わりに、然るべき人々と知り合い、彼等の音楽に焦点を合わせた新しいトレンドにこだわった。デビュー・アルバムは大ヒットにはならなかった－にも関わらず彼等の次作に対する関心は非常に大きいものだ。

急速に事態は進んだ。９月初旬にアルバムが発売される予定だという事は殆ど知られていなかったが。

「秋の新作のリストがある大手の新聞に載った時、俺達のアルバムについては何も書かれてなかったんだ。」とギタリストのAnders Eliassonは語り、満足そうな表情をする。「でも今は語られているんだよ！」

LAMBRETTAは、デビュー・シングル “Blow My Fuses” が発売された段階で既に長い間活動をして来たバンドだ。そのシングルはラジオで大ヒットし、1999年の夏の間は殆どスウェーデンでのナンバー１ヒットになっていた。ビデオクリップはその年のベスト・ビデオに選ばれた。それ故LAMBRETTAは人々から一発屋だと思われて来た。彼等のアルバムを聴いたその人々はいい仕事をしている、と気付いた事だろう。

ここ迄でも十分凄いが、これから始まる事に比べたら何もないも同然だ。

バンドの今後を警告した人々ですら、新作からの1stシングル”Bimbo”にぶっ飛んだ。グルーヴィーなHM風リフ、どっしりしたメロディーと姿勢のあるストレートな曲だがしっかり現実的だ。他の２、３曲と共にこの曲は音楽界の「ドリーム・チーム」であるPer Aldeheim、Alexander KronlundとMax Martinによって書かれたものだ。

それでは、LAMBRETTAは魔法をかけられる事を待っているバンドの１つに過ぎないのか？「彼等に曲を頼もうとは思ってなかったんだよ。」とバンドは言う。「事実は、彼等がLAMBRETTAにターゲットを絞った曲を書き、俺達が彼等のオファーに気分を害するだろうか？という事をレコード会社に問い合わせたんだよ。彼らは、俺達が本当に自分達の手で曲作りをしていた事を知っていたんだ。」

LAMBRETTAは提供された曲を聴いて気に入り、メンバー達のエゴよりも曲の良さの方がずっと重要であるという事に同意した。

「俺は1stアルバムの中の80％の曲を書いたけど、今は３曲位かな。」とAndersは言う。しかし彼はそれについて問題があるとは思っておらず、それがバンドにとって最良の事だと認識している。そしてLAMBRETTAは本当に「バンド」なのだ。彼等のライヴを観た事がある人達は、彼等が本当にステージで元気一杯に演奏するという事を保証してくれるだろう。彼等は、ただライヴを演って冷たいバターの様な態度を取る事に対するスウェーデン的謝罪が嫌いだ－彼等は観客に衝撃を与えるのだ。

LAMBRETTAのメンバーの年の差について語らずしてバンドについて討論する人は少ない。

Linda Sundbladがバンドに加入した時彼女はたったの15歳だった－メンバーの何人かの年の半分だ。誰もが彼女はバンドに合わないと思っていたが、それどころか彼女はバンドとスウェーデンの音楽シーン全体にビタミン注射の様な刺激を与えた。若くて、賢くて、才能がある彼女はRobynのロック版となった。多くの人達が彼女は長くバンドに留まるべきではないと考え、彼女をソロ・アーティストにしようとする様様な努力がなされたが、Lindaはそれを断った。

「みんなが私にソロになれ、バンドを抜けるべきだと悟らせようとすればする程、私はバンドに残るべきで、彼等が間違っているという事を証明しようとしたの。」と彼女は言う。「だって私達が一緒だとどれだけ強力かを知っているんだもの－バンドの１人１人がどれだけ大事かって事もね。売り込むべきアルバムを作らず沢山のギグを演った事がそれを証明しているわ。ロックしてステージを楽しむの－そしてみんな気付いたのよ。」

Lindaは現在20歳になり「女性スウェーデン人ロック・スター」の大役を担いながら成長を続けている。”Bimbo”のビデオクリップか、１年前のスウェーデンのグラミー賞のオープニングでの演奏を観て欲しい－彼等は本当にスウェーデンの音楽業界に喝を入れたのだ。

LAMBRETTAがもっと早くヘヴィーなギター・リフのあるポップスを演っていたら、彼等は大きなフックのある古典的ロック・バンド以上になっていただろう。にも関わらず真の繊細な楽曲がそこにはあるのだ。彼等は新しい世紀に突入するロックの40年間を今も勝ち抜いている。ある時期「アリーナ・ロック」という言葉は悪い噂となっていた。まるでそのものがジャンルであったかの様に。事実は、アリーナはそこにそぐわないバンドにとっては本当に悪夢でしかないという事なのだが、同時にその気にさせて素晴らしい空気を創るものでもある－ステージに居るのが本当に然るべきバンドなら、の話だ。

LAMBRETTAの2ndアルバムを聴いた時、宙に上げられた手や沢山のライターの炎と飛び跳ねる観客を想像するのは簡単だ。これらの全ては、自分達の作品が本当に強力だと知っているタイトで正確なバンドだからこそある。LAMBRETTAはツアーで素晴らしい振舞いをするバンドなのだ。

バンドは2001年11月現在アルバムのプロモーションとスウェーデン国内のライヴ・ツアーを実施中です。ヘヴィーなGのポップ・チューンに、キュートな女性Voという組み合わせはハード・ポップ、メロディアスHR系ファンにも魅力的だと思います。

新譜”LAMBRETTA”はユニヴァーサルさんより2002年２月６日に日本盤が予定されていましたが、残念ながらキャンセルされました。

Another good new comer from Sweden: GRAND ILLUSION. Their album called “THE BOOK OF HOW TO MAKE IT” is now on sale (on March 23rd, 2001) from MARQUEE/Avalon in Japan and will be out on April 7th, 2001 from ESCAPE MUSIC in Europe. The Japanese edition includes a bonus track called “The Hardest Part”. You can listen to a part of their songs here.

GRAND ILLUSION originates from the band: PROMOTION. We have played together since 1986, sometimes with a horn section and sometimes without. Through a lot of years the band played music that we ourselves liked to play, both own songs and covers songs. We did shows in the southern of Sweden mostly just for fun. But it wasn’t until Anders Rydholm built a music studio in 1995 that we started to record our own material. Our first record “NOT FOR SALE” is compilation of mostly old material that we wanted to document. It was done with a very low budget and over a long period of time and the aim wasn’t so high. We released our first record “NOT FOR SALE” under the name “PROMOTION” and through Anders company, GodisPaScen. We came in touch with Georg Siegl, a German web record dealer, and with his help the ball started to roll. Great reviews in both websites and music magazines made us believe that there was market for a band like ours. It also gave inspiration to do a fresh new album with better songs, higher quality and with a more professional attitude. “YEAH, YEAH” is also released under the same circumstances and Georg Siegl helped us once again. The budget is still low but all the positive response from our first record made it easy. Even better reviews on this record and a lot of really nice feedback from listeners all over the world. Record number 3 are much heavier than the 2first records. It’s more pure AOR. In May 2000 we also got signed to Escape Music. Then we started to talk about changing the band name. After four months of dwelling and thinking we finally agreed on “GRAND ILLUSION”. GRAND ILLUSION is a 5 piece band but it’s focused on 3 people. Anders, who writes the music, arranges and plays a ot of the instruments. Ola Karlsson writes all our lyrics. Peter Sundell is the lead singer and has a pretty unique voice. Nowadays we seldom play live since the opportunities for this kind of music is very low in Sweden unless you play techno, hip-hop or death metal. We don’t but all the guys wants to tour again so if there were possibility of doing some live gigs again we would be certainly be interested. Members: Peter Sundell Vocals, Per Svensson Vocals, Anders Rydholm Keyboards, Bass and Guitar, Christian Sundell Drums and Ola Karlsson Guitar.

スウェーデンからまた新たな新人、GRAND ILLUSIONが登場しました。彼等のアルバム”THE BOOK OF HOW TO MAKE IT”は2001年３月23日にMARQUEE/Avalonさんから発売に、更に欧州では2001年４月７日にESCAPE MUSICから発売。日本盤にはボーナストラック”The Hardest Part”が収録されています。

GRAND ILLUSIONはPROMOTIONを基に始まったバンドだ。1986年から共に演っているが、ホーン・セクションがあったりなかったりだ。長年を通してバンドは自分達が演りたい音楽を演ってきた、オリジナルだろうとカヴァー曲だろうと。仕事というよりも楽しみの為にスウェーデン南部でライヴをやっていた。1995年にAnders Rydholmがスタジオを作り、自分達の作品をレコーディングする様になる迄は。1stアルバムは”NOT FOR SALE”は古い作品を集めたものだ。低予算で作られたもので、長い期間がかかった為目標はそれ程高くはなかった。PROMOTIONの名前で”NOT FOR SALE”をAndersの会社GodisPaScenから発売した。バンドはドイツのネット・レコード・ディーラーのGeorg Sieglと接触、彼の協力により「ボールが転がり始めた」。サイト、音楽雑誌の好意的なレビューがGIの様なバンドにもマーケットがあるとバンドに自信を持たせた。と同時により質の高い曲が収録され、よりプロらしい姿勢を持った全く新しいアルバムを作る為のインスピレーションを与える事となった。”YEAH, YEAH”は同じ状況で発売され、Georg Sieglが再び協力してくれた。予算は相変わらず低かったが、1stアルバムへの全ての積極的な反応が後押ししてくれた。このアルバムには更に好意的なレビューが寄せられ、世界中のリスナーからの好意的な感想が寄せられた。２枚のアルバムへのレビューの多くをここで読む事が出来るのでチェックして欲しい：

3rdアルバムは前２枚の作品よりも更にヘヴィーなものとなった。よりピュアなAORだ。2000年５月にバンドはEscape Musicと契約。そしてバンドは名前を変更しようと話し合いを始めた。４ヵ月後バンドはその名前を”GRAND ILLUSION”に決定する。GRAND ILLUSIONは５人編成だが、その内の３人に焦点が当てられる：Andersは作曲、アレンジ、そして多くのパートを担当している。 Ola Karlssonは全ての歌詞を担当。Peter Sundellはリード・シンガーで非常に個性的な声の持ち主だ。現在バンドは殆どライヴ活動をしていない。何故なら、テクノ、ヒップホップかデスメタルでも演っていない限りスウェーデンではチャンスが非常に少ないからだ。バンドはツアーを希望しており、もしライヴを演る可能性があれば間違いなくバンドは興味を示すだろう。メンバー：Peter Sundell (Vo)、Per Svensson (Vo)、Anders Rydholm (Key&B&G)、 Christian Sundell (Ds)、Ola Karlsson (G)。

スウェーデンからまた素晴らしいAORプロジェクトが登場しました。Patrik Tibell (Vo)とRoger Ljunggren (G)らの３人によるT’BELLです。 12曲入りのアルバム”REPLAY” はAOR HEAVENから2000年７月に発売、日本では２曲のボーナストラック（”Sorry Elaine”と”Forever”）を加えて2000年11月22日にMARQUEE/Avalonさんから発売となっています。以下はGのRogerから届いた彼等の簡単なバイオグラフィーです。

 

 

T’BELLのアイディアは80年代の終わりに始まったんだ。PerはSkaraのレコード会社で働いていて、Patrik Tibelの事を話してくれたんだ、Patrikは同じレコード会社でスタジオ・エンジニアとして働いていたんだけど、TRACEっていうローカル・バンドのVoとしても知られていたのさ。バンドの曲を殆ど全て書いていただけでなく、彼は自分用に沢山の曲を作っていた。そしてPerはその内の何曲かを聴く機会があって…彼は、Patrikの曲は彼がこれ迄聴いてきた最も素晴らしいAORの曲の数々に匹敵すると話してくれたよ…。この当時僕はスタジオ／セッション・ミュージシャンとして働いていて、TV番組の仕事でPatrikと一緒になった時に彼と逢ったのさ。彼は僕に自分の曲を何曲か聴かせてくれて、僕はぶっ飛んだよ。僕達は、近い将来是非一緒にスタジオで仕事をしようよ、と話し合ったんだけど、その時はお互いが沢山のプロジェクトと仕事をしていて、「一緒に演る」っていう僕達の計画を実行に移すには10年かかった…。僕達はまず昔の曲の新しいヴァージョンを作る事から始めたよ、どの作品も発売するっていう現実の予定は全くなかったんだけどね、でもPerが、レコード契約を取る為に真面目に取り組んでみないか？と勧めてくれたんだ。曲は15年もの間大事に温めて来たものなんだよ！！！そして僕達はやり遂げたんだ。君が聴いたのは僕達が作ったデモで、それが僕達をドイツのレコード会社AOR HEAVENと契約するきっかけになったんだ。僕達は現在、もうすぐ発売されるアルバム”REPLAY”の最終作業にかかっているんだ、アルバムは2000年５月に発売予定だよ。僕とPatrik以外のアルバムでのミュージシャンは、曲の仕上がりが最高になる様に、そして僕達が求めていた特別な音やスタイルを獲得する為にPatrikが特別に選んだスタジオ・ミュージシャンだよ。君達が、僕等と同じ位このアルバムに満足してくれる事を祈っているよ。

彼が言う様に、T’BELLの音楽は80年代風AOR。キャッチーでポップで、非常に無駄のないすっきりとした音作りがなされています。思わず一緒に歌いたくなる、という表現が彼等の音を表現するには一番ぴったりかも知れません。Mikael Erlandson辺りが好きな人には是非お勧めの作品です。

We proudly introduce an excellent AOR project from Sweden called T’BELL with Patrik Tibell (Vo) and Roger Ljunggren (G). They’ve already finished working for their album called “REPLAY” with 12 tracks, which is now out from a German label AOR HEAVEN (July 2000) and which is on sale now with 2 bonus tracks called “Sorry Elaine” and “Forever” from MARQUEE/Avalon in Japan (November 2000). You’ll read their biography by Roger, the guitar player.

 

 

The whole idea of T’BELL started back in the late 80’s. Per was working at a record company in Skara and told me about Patrik Tibell, who was working there as a studio engineer, but he was also known for being the singer of a local band called TRACE. Besides writing almost all their materials, he wrote a lot of materials of his own – and some of these songs Per got the oppotunity to listen to – and told me that those were some of the most excellent AOR-songs he has ever heard… At this time I was working as a studio and session musician and actually met Patrik when we were doing a TV show together. He played some of these songs for me back then and I also got blown away by his songs. We said to each other that we had to work together in the studio in the near future, but as we worked with a lot of projects at that time it turned out to take 10 years to fulfill our plans about playing together… We started out making new versions of the old songs, with no real plan of releasing any of it, but Per said to us that we had to make a serious attempt to get a record deal. Our materials almost had been put away for 15 years!!! And so we did – so what you have listened to is the demo we made, which led us to sign with the german record company AOR HEAVEN. We’re right now finishing the last parts of the forthcoming album “REPLAY”, which is planned to be released in May. It will contain 12 songs written between ’82 – ’95 and could be described as a pure 80’s styled AOR album. Besides me and Patrik the musicians on the album are studio musicians specially picked by Patrik to get the best possible result of the songs and getting that special sound and style we were looking for.
