BRUCE ROBINSON ROOM

ROMEO AND JULIET
(Region 2, subtitles in Japanese and English)

A famous story based on Shakespeare's drama. The Capulets and the Montagues in Verona have been having a feud. Lord Capulet has the only daughter Juliet, and Lord Montague has the only son Romeo. Romeo goes with his cousin and friends to a party of the Capulets wearing a mask, he falls in love with Juliet. They are in love each other. The next day they get married at the church of Friar Laurence with help of Juliet's nurse. In the middle of town young Capulets and young Montagues start fighting, Tybalt, Juliet's cousin kills Mercutio, Romeo's cousin. Romeo gets mad and kills Tybalt, gets banished from Verona. Lord Capulet, Juliet's father promises Paris, a relative of the Prince of Verona, to get her married to him, their wedding will be held on Thursday. Hopeless Juliet gets to Friar Laurence for his help. He gives Juliet a bottle of a remedy which places her in a state of suspended animation, and he writes a letter to Romeo and asks a messanger to deliver it. If Juliet takes the remedy Wednesday night, she is placed in a state of suspended animation for 42 hours, Friar Laurence will let her and Romeo together go after her funeral. It goes well until her body lays at the cemetery.....Balthazar, Romeo's vassal sees the funeral of Juliet and gets to Romeo to inform him before Romeo receives a letter from Friar Laurence. Romeo believes Juliet died, he takes poison and dies. Then Juliet wakes up and finds Romed died there, and she kills herself by Romeo's sword. Both parents really regret how stupid feud had been going on between them after they lost their own child.

The debut of Bruce as an actor, Benvolio is a cousin of Romeo. He's totally "beautiful" at the age of 21/22 in this movie, he even looks a bit innocence. The director of this movie is a gay and wanted to sleep with Bruce, who "had an enormous asthma attack that involved Cinemascope despair because of what had gone on with" the director. (quote from "Smoking In Bed") The shot of showing hips of Romeo who is totally naked must be the director's taste.

I don't feel it's an old movie which was shown in 1968 because the story is based on an old drama in the Middle Ages. At first I didn't notice Bruce because this was the 2nd movie for me to watch related materials on him after "STILL CRAZY". When I saw a profile of Benvolio, I got to know he's Bruce. This movie is the only one which is available on DVD from materials Bruce was for in 60's, the DVD has been re-released again and again and the price is only JPY1500.00- in Japan, and it's classic.....you'd better watch it!
